Atlas Silk Workshop, Sign, Hotan, Xinjiang, China

The Atlas silk workshop is about 25 km from central Hotan, in Jiya township. At the workshop, silk is made by hand in the traditional way, from cocoon to weaving.

Atlas is the Uyghur word for silk. The special type of dye-resist silk pattern made at this workshop is called royal silk or khan atlas. Khan Atlas is the fabric for special-occasion silk dresses for Uyghur women. See a traditional Uyghur wedding dress made of Khan Atlas Silk..
