During the Vietnam war, the US government told the its citizens that we were not bombing Cambodia. It was a lie but they couldn't tell us the truth for 'national security' reasons. Of course, the Cambodians were certainly aware of the bombings. It seems the threat to national security was limited to Americans finding out about the bombings.
Wikileaks did not commit espionage to get access to the documents. They are only the messenger bringing truth into the light.
