NOORDIN TOP WORKS FOR THE SECURITY SERVICES?
Noordin Top
The name of Malaysian born Noordin Top, of Jemaah Islamiyah, has been linked to the July 2009 Jakarta hotel bombs.

Reportedly, the police found handwritten notes, a cell phone and a bomb in room 1808 of the Marriott, where the bombers had reportedly lived for several days.
Reportedly, one of the men who checked into room 1808 had told a hotel receptionist his name was "Noordin."

Former Indonesian president, Abdurrahman Wahid was saying in 2005 of the Bali bombings:
“The orders to do this or that came from within our armed forces… There is not a single Islamic group … that is not controlled by (Indonesian) intelligence.”
Jemaah Islamiyah is thought to have been set up by the American trained Indonesian military.

Indonesian special forces regiment Kopassus is trained by the Americans.
Kopassus 'set up a Moslem terror group called Komando Jihad.'
According to Dr Damien Kingsbury, head of philosophical, political and international studies at Deakin University: "Kopassus... has engaged in... hostage rescue missions. The first was in 1981, when a Garuda aircraft was hijacked.... Kopassus... set up the Islamic organisation Komando Jihad that hijacked the plane in 1981 and which has since emerged as Jemaah Islamiah."

Jakarta human-rights activist Bonar Naipospos told Asia Times Online: "General Suparman is one of the generals who was behind the extremist Jihad groups. Who might want to cause trouble in Indonesia?
Normally it is elements of the military who are suspected of being behind any 'terrorism'.
Indonesia's President, Susilo Yudhoyono, is a former general.
His party has just defeated the party of Prabowo Subianto, a former general.
Prabowo is suspected of having been behind the riots of May 1998.
Prabowo, who has been described as being a close friend of the Pentagon.
According to the Financial Times, 17 July 2009, ( Jakarta suspects):
"President Yudhoyono who was re-elected earlier this month suggested none too subtly in an emotional speech at the presidential palace that his political opponents might have been involved.
"While he did not name anyone, he left little doubt he was referring to Prabowo Subianto, the one-time son-in-law of the former strongman Suharto who was the running mate of Mr Yudhoyono’s rival and predecessor, Megawati Sukarnoputri, in this month’s presidential election.
"Mr Prabowo, a former general who has admitted to dirtry tricks including kidnapping student activists during the dying days of the Suharto regime, has refused to acknowledge Mr Yudhoyono’s election victory, citing numerous voting irregularities."

Then there was the 2003 Marriott hotel bombing in Jakarta.
Some people suspect the CIA and its friends were linked to the 2003 Marriott bomb.

Prabowo has been accused of being involved in attempts to destabilise Indonesia.
On 17 July 2009, Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said intelligence reports suggested there were attempts to destabilise Indonesia, including a plot to kill him. (Plots under way to destabilise Indonesia: Yudhoyono)
He showed photographs of a group of people conducting a shooting exercise with the president’s picture as a target.
"We have the video and photographs (of the training)," he said.
He said intelligence also suggested attempts were under way to sabotage his apparent election victory.
On 17 July 2009, Major General Wahyono of Jakarta police said that the hotel bombing 'suspects' stayed on the 18th floor of the Marriott where un-detonated explosives were found.
Top hotels in Jakarta have inquisitive security guards patrolling corridors and inquisitive maids checking hotel rooms. It is strange that nobody noticed anything odd going on.

Reportedly, the CIA is active in Asia.
Allegedly it uses double agents and patsies in acts of terrorism.
It is worth repeating that Former Indonesian president Wahid said in 2005 of the Bali bombings:
"There is not a single Islamic group ... that is not controlled by (Indonesian) intelligence."
Indonesia's intelligence services are said to work closely with the CIA.

2. Living very near to Hambali, in Sungei Manggis, was Fauzi Hasbi, an agent of the Indonesian security services, who, reportedly, work closely with the CIA.
Hambali played a major role in the 1995 Bojinka plot, which is believed to have been an Operation-Northwoods-style CIA plot.
Operation Bojinka was a planned series of 'terrorist' attacks which was alleged to include the flying of a Cessna filled with explosives into CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia.
Operation Bojinka was abandoned after an apartment fire in Manila on January 6, 1995 led to the discovery by police of evidence of the plot.

3. Living near Hambali in this village were Imam Samudra (allegedly a key figure in the 2002 Bali bombings) and Abu Bakar Bashir, of Jemaah Islamiyah.
4. In January 2000, Hambali attended an al-Qaeda (CIA) summit in nearby Kuala Lumpur.
This summit discussed 9 11. [USA Today, 2/12/2002; CNN, 8/30/2002]
At the request of the CIA, the Malaysian Secret Service monitored the summit and then passed the information on to the US.
The CIA got pictures and video footage of Hambali at the meeting and already had pictures of him from a computer linked to the Bojinka plot.
In 2000, Fauzi Hasbi, Indonesian government agent, had a private meeting in his hotel with Bashir and the representative from Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), a militant group in the Philippines.
Indonesian intelligence had at least one other mole known by the alias Dadang.
A US Treasury press release in 2003 stated that:
“[Hambali] was videotaped in a January 2000 meeting in Malaysia with two of the September 11, 2001 hijackers of AA Flight 77 - Khalid Almihdhar and Nawaf Alhazmi.” [US Department of the Treasury, 1/24/2003 ]

5. In 2000, Christmas Eve attacks in Indonesia comprised a series of 38 bombings in 11 cities and were directed against churches.
Nineteen people were killed and over a hundred injured. [Asia Times, 10/8/2004]
The al-Qaeda affiliate Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) was blamed.
In February 2001, the Indonesian newsweekly Tempo published a cover story suggesting links between the bombings and the Indonesian military, the TNI.
The article pointed out that Edi Sugiarto, who was quickly arrested and confessed to assembling 15 of the bombs used in the town of Medan, had long run a car repair shop in the province of Aceh.
Members of TNI and Indonesia’s special forces, Kopassus, regularly went to his shop for repairs and just to hang out.
Phone records indicated that Sugiarto called Fauzi Hasbi seven times before the bombings.
Hasbi is a leader of JI, but Tempo outed him as an Indonesian government mole.
In 2005, two years after Hasbi’s death, the Australian television program SBS Dateline provided additional evidence of Hasbi’s long-time links to the TNI (see 1979-February 22, 2003).
Fasbi also called Jacob Tanwijaya, a businessman well connected with the TNI, 35 times.
That businessman in turn talked on the phone to Lt. Col. Iwan Prilianto, a Kopassus special forces intelligence officer, over 70 times.
Fasbi made at least one call to another key figure in the bombings.
The International Crisis Group, an international think tank, later commented, “[I]t is hard to avoid the suspicion that someone in the armed forces must have known that at least the Medan part [of the bombings] was in the works…” [International Crisis Group, 12/11/2002]
Paul Wolfowitz was US ambassador to Indonesia (1986 to 1989). From 2001 to 2005, during the George W. Bush administration, Wolfowitz served as U.S. Deputy Secretary of Defense.
6. Jemaah Islamiyah (JI), the Southeast Asian Islamist group, was founded in 1992, and it is said to be linked to al Qaeda and to the US-trained Indonesian security services.
One of the founding members of JI was Indonesian government agent Fauzi Hasbi.
Hasbi helped arrange JI’s first major meeting, held in Bogor, Indonesia.
The Australian television program SBS Dateline will later comment: “The extraordinary story of Fauzi Hasbi raises many important questions about JI and the Indonesian authorities. Why didn’t they smash the terror group in its infancy?”

7. On 12 October 2002, bombs exploded near the Sari Club and the Padi Club in the heart of Kuta, in Bali. 202 people were killed and several hundred were injured.
On 16 October 2002 Indonesian police arrested a former Air Force officer who confessed to building the bomb.
This officer was later released.
According to a news story in the Sydney Morning Herald, 2 November 2002, the Indonesian security services may have handled the Bali bomb.
"Some time around the 30 October 2002, senior officers in the Indonesian military HQ gave a piece of information to a military attache from a Western embassy in Indonesia - the source of explosive used in the October 12 bombing in Bali was the head of the counter-terrorism unit with the army's special forces."
The father-in-law of the officer concerned is Hendropriyono, who was then Indonesia's spy chief.

Adm. Thomas Fargo, Commander, U.S. Pacific Command, welcomes Abdullah Mahmud Hendropriyono, Chief of Indonesia’s National Intelligence Agency, during an office call at Camp Smith, Hawaii, in January 2003 to discuss counterterrorism cooperation and mutual security interests.
Allegedly, Kuwaiti citizen Omar Al-Faruq played a part in the Bali bomb plot.
Al-Faruq was arrested in Bogor on June 5, 2002 and handed over to the US authorities.
Former Indonesian State Intelligence Coordinating Board (BAKIN) chief A.C. Manulang was quoted by Tempo as saying that Al-Faruq was most likely a CIA-recruited agent.

A Pentagon official in Washington has confirmed that al-Faruq escaped from a U.S. detention facility in Bagram, Afghanistan, on 10 July 2005.
The airline manifest of Garuda airlines shows that at least two generals from Jakarta visited Bali three days before the bombings and that they returned to Jakarta one day before the Sari Club was blown up.
This was confirmed by armed forces chief General Sutarto, who claimed that General Djaja Suparman was on vacation, while General Ryamizard Riyacudu, chief of staff, was said to have gone to Bali for health reasons.

General Suparman is allegedly one of the generals behind certain 'Moslem' militias.
He reportedly set up militias to counter student demonstrations in 1998.
One of these militias, Pram Swarkasa, allegedly became Laskar Jihad.
Bomb explosions in Indonesia have have often been linked to the military.
A bomb at the Attorney General's office in Jakarta in July 2000 went off one hour after Tommy Suharto had been interrogated by the police.
The bombs were reportedly traced back to the army and a former member of Suharto's guard.
A spate of explosions in the capital Jakarta in 2000 included a huge car-bomb blast in the underground parking lot of the Jakarta Stock Exchange.
Two members of Kopassus (army special forces) were convicted and jailed for that act of terrorism.
It was reported in the Jakarta Post that convicted Bali bomber Ali Imron had been seen, in 2004, having a Starbucks coffee in a plush Jakarta shopping mall in the company of top police official Brigadier General Gorries Mere. Imron apparently also visited the Hard Rock Cafe.
After Amrozi had been arrested for his part in the Bali Bomb, National Police chief General Da'i Bachtiar had a face to face meeting with him. Bachtiar laughed, shook hands and posed for photographs with Amrozi.
Most of the top Indonesian generals have been trained in the USA.

3. Living near Hambali in this village were Imam Samudra (allegedly a key figure in the 2002 Bali bombings) and Abu Bakar Bashir, of Jemaah Islamiyah.
4. In January 2000, Hambali attended an al-Qaeda (CIA) summit in nearby Kuala Lumpur.
This summit discussed 9 11. [USA Today, 2/12/2002; CNN, 8/30/2002]
At the request of the CIA, the Malaysian Secret Service monitored the summit and then passed the information on to the US.
The CIA got pictures and video footage of Hambali at the meeting and already had pictures of him from a computer linked to the Bojinka plot.
In 2000, Fauzi Hasbi, Indonesian government agent, had a private meeting in his hotel with Bashir and the representative from Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), a militant group in the Philippines.
Indonesian intelligence had at least one other mole known by the alias Dadang.
A US Treasury press release in 2003 stated that:
“[Hambali] was videotaped in a January 2000 meeting in Malaysia with two of the September 11, 2001 hijackers of AA Flight 77 - Khalid Almihdhar and Nawaf Alhazmi.” [US Department of the Treasury, 1/24/2003 ]

5. In 2000, Christmas Eve attacks in Indonesia comprised a series of 38 bombings in 11 cities and were directed against churches.
Nineteen people were killed and over a hundred injured. [Asia Times, 10/8/2004]
The al-Qaeda affiliate Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) was blamed.
In February 2001, the Indonesian newsweekly Tempo published a cover story suggesting links between the bombings and the Indonesian military, the TNI.
The article pointed out that Edi Sugiarto, who was quickly arrested and confessed to assembling 15 of the bombs used in the town of Medan, had long run a car repair shop in the province of Aceh.
Members of TNI and Indonesia’s special forces, Kopassus, regularly went to his shop for repairs and just to hang out.
Phone records indicated that Sugiarto called Fauzi Hasbi seven times before the bombings.
Hasbi is a leader of JI, but Tempo outed him as an Indonesian government mole.
In 2005, two years after Hasbi’s death, the Australian television program SBS Dateline provided additional evidence of Hasbi’s long-time links to the TNI (see 1979-February 22, 2003).
Fasbi also called Jacob Tanwijaya, a businessman well connected with the TNI, 35 times.
That businessman in turn talked on the phone to Lt. Col. Iwan Prilianto, a Kopassus special forces intelligence officer, over 70 times.
Fasbi made at least one call to another key figure in the bombings.
The International Crisis Group, an international think tank, later commented, “[I]t is hard to avoid the suspicion that someone in the armed forces must have known that at least the Medan part [of the bombings] was in the works…” [International Crisis Group, 12/11/2002]
Paul Wolfowitz was US ambassador to Indonesia (1986 to 1989). From 2001 to 2005, during the George W. Bush administration, Wolfowitz served as U.S. Deputy Secretary of Defense.
6. Jemaah Islamiyah (JI), the Southeast Asian Islamist group, was founded in 1992, and it is said to be linked to al Qaeda and to the US-trained Indonesian security services.
One of the founding members of JI was Indonesian government agent Fauzi Hasbi.
Hasbi helped arrange JI’s first major meeting, held in Bogor, Indonesia.
The Australian television program SBS Dateline will later comment: “The extraordinary story of Fauzi Hasbi raises many important questions about JI and the Indonesian authorities. Why didn’t they smash the terror group in its infancy?”

7. On 12 October 2002, bombs exploded near the Sari Club and the Padi Club in the heart of Kuta, in Bali. 202 people were killed and several hundred were injured.
On 16 October 2002 Indonesian police arrested a former Air Force officer who confessed to building the bomb.
This officer was later released.
According to a news story in the Sydney Morning Herald, 2 November 2002, the Indonesian security services may have handled the Bali bomb.
"Some time around the 30 October 2002, senior officers in the Indonesian military HQ gave a piece of information to a military attache from a Western embassy in Indonesia - the source of explosive used in the October 12 bombing in Bali was the head of the counter-terrorism unit with the army's special forces."
The father-in-law of the officer concerned is Hendropriyono, who was then Indonesia's spy chief.

Adm. Thomas Fargo, Commander, U.S. Pacific Command, welcomes Abdullah Mahmud Hendropriyono, Chief of Indonesia’s National Intelligence Agency, during an office call at Camp Smith, Hawaii, in January 2003 to discuss counterterrorism cooperation and mutual security interests.
Allegedly, Kuwaiti citizen Omar Al-Faruq played a part in the Bali bomb plot.
Al-Faruq was arrested in Bogor on June 5, 2002 and handed over to the US authorities.
Former Indonesian State Intelligence Coordinating Board (BAKIN) chief A.C. Manulang was quoted by Tempo as saying that Al-Faruq was most likely a CIA-recruited agent.

A Pentagon official in Washington has confirmed that al-Faruq escaped from a U.S. detention facility in Bagram, Afghanistan, on 10 July 2005.
The airline manifest of Garuda airlines shows that at least two generals from Jakarta visited Bali three days before the bombings and that they returned to Jakarta one day before the Sari Club was blown up.
This was confirmed by armed forces chief General Sutarto, who claimed that General Djaja Suparman was on vacation, while General Ryamizard Riyacudu, chief of staff, was said to have gone to Bali for health reasons.

General Suparman is allegedly one of the generals behind certain 'Moslem' militias.
He reportedly set up militias to counter student demonstrations in 1998.
One of these militias, Pram Swarkasa, allegedly became Laskar Jihad.
Bomb explosions in Indonesia have have often been linked to the military.
A bomb at the Attorney General's office in Jakarta in July 2000 went off one hour after Tommy Suharto had been interrogated by the police.
The bombs were reportedly traced back to the army and a former member of Suharto's guard.
A spate of explosions in the capital Jakarta in 2000 included a huge car-bomb blast in the underground parking lot of the Jakarta Stock Exchange.
Two members of Kopassus (army special forces) were convicted and jailed for that act of terrorism.
It was reported in the Jakarta Post that convicted Bali bomber Ali Imron had been seen, in 2004, having a Starbucks coffee in a plush Jakarta shopping mall in the company of top police official Brigadier General Gorries Mere. Imron apparently also visited the Hard Rock Cafe.
After Amrozi had been arrested for his part in the Bali Bomb, National Police chief General Da'i Bachtiar had a face to face meeting with him. Bachtiar laughed, shook hands and posed for photographs with Amrozi.
Most of the top Indonesian generals have been trained in the USA.

On 9 July 2009, China launched its first Indonesia-China Economic and Trade Cooperation Zone in Jakarta, capital of Indonesia.

He was to try to persuade the Indonesian government to allow U.S. corporations to build various huge projects.
The U.S. wanted to control Indonesia, in order to ensure American dominance in Southeast Asia.

"There were two primary objectives of my work.
"First I was to justify huge international loans that would funnel money to Main and other US companies (such as Bechtel, Halliburton, Stone & Webster and Brown & Root) through massive engineering and construction projects.
"Second, I would work to bankrupt the countries that received those loans . . . so they would be for ever beholden to their creditors, and so they would present easy targets when we [the US] needed favours, including military bases, UN votes or access to oil and other natural resources."
And if a government, like that in Indonesia, does not cooperate with the USA, then perhaps some bombs can go off?
The US government might need the help of its agents within the Indonesian military?
Reportedly, in many countries from Indonesia to Iraq, it is the CIA, or its rivals, who own many members of the local military.
"At Nigeria's Defence Intelligence School ... 30 military officers from seven African countries graduated from a training course...

The CIA was following the example of British Intelligence and sought to use Islam to further its goals. They wanted to find a charismatic religious leader that they could promote and control and they began to cooperate with groups such as the Muslim Brotherhood. With the rise of Nasser the Brotherhood was also courted more seriously by the pro-Western Arab regimes of Saudi Arabia and Jordan. They needed all the popular support that they could muster against the rise of Nasser-inspired Arab nationalism to keep their regimes intact.
The Muslim Brotherhood was an obvious ally against Nasser, because he had abolished it from Egypt after it was involved in a failed assassination attempt on his life in 1954. The Brotherhood rejected Nasser's policy that, for the most part, kept religion out of politics. Officially the Brotherhood was an outlawed organization, but it remained influential and active within Egypt working against the secular regime, often hand-in-hand with British Intelligence. In June of 1955 MI6 was already approaching the Brotherhood in Syria to agitate against the new government that showed strong left-wing tendencies and a desire to merge with Egypt. The Brotherhood became an even more important asset after Nasser announced the Egyptian takeover of the Suez...
In Syria, in 1982, there was a major conflict between the Muslim Brotherhood and the Syrian government at the city of Hamma that resulted in 20,000 casualties. In the aftermath Syria's President Asad revealed that the Muslim Brotherhood forces were armed with US-made equipment...
Israel, forever inclined to back divisive movements, surfaced as another supporter of Islam and began to fund the Muslim Brotherhood and the Palestinian Islamic movement Hamas.
The most noteworthy success of the Islamic movement during this time was of course the overthrow of the Shah of Iran and the installation of the Ayatollah Khomeini as the Islamic dictator. British Intelligence had used their contacts with Iran's mullahs and ayatollahs to help overthrow Mossadegh and install the Shah back in 1953, and these contacts were maintained and used again to overthrow the Shah when his regime fell out of favor."

This was confirmed by armed forces chief General Sutarto, who claimed that General Djaja Suparman was on vacation, while General Ryamizard Riyacudu, chief of staff, was said to have gone to Bali for health reasons. The CIA was following the example of British Intelligence and sought to use Islam to further its goals. They wanted to find a charismatic religious leader that they could promote and control and they began to cooperate with groups such as the Muslim Brotherhood. With the rise of Nasser the Brotherhood was also courted more seriously by the pro-Western Arab regimes of Saudi Arabia and Jordan. They needed all the popular support that they could muster against the rise of Nasser-inspired Arab nationalism to keep their regimes intact.
The Muslim Brotherhood was an obvious ally against Nasser, because he had abolished it from Egypt after it was involved in a failed assassination attempt on his life in 1954. The Brotherhood rejected Nasser's policy that, for the most part, kept religion out of politics. Officially the Brotherhood was an outlawed organization, but it remained influential and active within Egypt working against the secular regime, often hand-in-hand with British Intelligence. In June of 1955 MI6 was already approaching the Brotherhood in Syria to agitate against the new government that showed strong left-wing tendencies and a desire to merge with Egypt. The Brotherhood became an even more important asset after Nasser announced the Egyptian takeover of the Suez...

The blasts killed at least eight people and wounded more than 50 -- and broke a four-year lull in terrorism in the world's most populous Muslim nation. Although significantly weakened by a crackdown in recent years, the attacks indicated Islamic militants still have the means to mount deadly assaults, even in heavily protected areas of Indonesia's capital.

The bombings also exposed the challenge of securing luxury hotels frequented by Westerners, a popular target for terrorists. A group of more than a dozen executives with American and other Western companies was holding a regular Friday morning meeting near the Marriott restaurant where the explosives were detonated, and many of them were among the victims, hospital lists showed.
At least eight Americans were among those injured in the two blasts. Indonesia was last hit by terrorists in October 2005, when three suicide bombers with explosives-laden backpacks killed 20 people at restaurants on the resort island of Bali. The Jakarta Marriott was targeted six years ago in a car bombing that left 12 people dead. Both attacks were blamed on the Southeast Asian terrorist group Jemaah Islamiyah.
Friday's attackers evaded hotel security and smuggled explosives into the Marriott by posing as guests and assembling the bombs in room 1808, where an undetonated device was later found by police. "They had been using the room as their 'command post' since July 15, and today they were supposed to check out," police chief Gen. Bambang Hendarso Danuri said. At the Marriott, such a "deluxe" room, with marble-decorated bathrooms and plush furnishings, goes for about $200 a night.
Security video footage captured the moment of the explosion. The brief, grainy images show a man in a cap pulling a bag on wheels across the Marriott lobby toward the restaurant, followed by a flash and a blast of white smoke. "There was a big explosion followed by a shock wave," said Ahmad Rochadi, a security guard at the Marriott who was checking cars in the basement. "I rushed upstairs and saw smoke billowing from the lobby."
The blast occurred as the Marriott was hosting a regular business meeting organized by the consultancy firm CastleAsia, said the group, which is headed by an American. An Australian think tank, the Strategic Policy Institute, had warned that Jemaah Islamiyah might launch new attacks just a day before Friday's deadly strike.
International luxury hotels have become a common target for extremists in recent years, with at least eight bombings at major chains since 2003. In Indonesia, security is tight at five-star hotels, where guests must typically walk through metal detectors and vehicles are inspected. But many visitors say searches are often cursory.

Defense analyst Paul Beaver, former top editor at Jane's Defense Weekly, said putting in place the kind of stringent security measures needed to help prevent attacks is difficult for hotels -- and risks making properties that are supposed to be welcoming to weary travelers feel like prisons.
"You don't want to embarrass your guests with security measures," he said, noting that plotters in dozens of countries can also alter tactics based on experience gained from prior attacks. "This is the risk we take. There are a number of attacks like these waiting to happen."
In Indonesia, he said, the culprits seemed to have learned from hotel attacks in the Indian financial capital of Mumbai in November, when a three-day siege of the Taj Mahal hotel, the Oberoi's Trident hotel and eight other sites left 164 dead....

Authorities did not immediately name a suspect, but suspicion fell on Jemaah Islamiyah or its allies. The al-Qaida-linked network is blamed for past attacks in Indonesia, including the 2003 bombing at the Marriott in which 12 people died. Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, who is widely credited with leading a crackdown on extremism, said the attack was carried out by a "terrorist group" and vowed to arrest the perpetrators.
President Barack Obama condemned the "outrageous attacks" and said the U.S. government stands ready to help its ally in the effort to combat extremism. Both explosions were at the lower levels of high-rise buildings in the prestigious Mega Kuningan neighborhood.
Anti-terrorist forces with automatic weapons rushed to the site, and authorities blocked access to the hotels in a district also home to foreign embassies. Two of the wounded were employees of Freeport McMoRan Copper & Gold, Inc., a spokesman for the Phoenix-based company said.
Freeport operates the world's largest gold mine in Indonesia's restive eastern Papua province, where several attacks have occurred in the past week near the firm's sprawling Grasberg mining complex, leaving at least 15 people dead or wounded.

JAKARTA, Indonesia - The mangled faces of two suspected suicide attackers may be the main clue linking the bombings of two luxury American hotels in the Indonesian capital with a notorious Al Qaeda-linked militant network that has struck many times before.

Investigators worked with medical teams yesterday to reconstruct the remains of the culprits believed to have set off explosions that tore through the restaurants of the J.W. Marriott and Ritz-Carlton at breakfast time the day before. Seven were killed, plus the two suspected attackers, and 50 wounded, many of them foreigners.
The method, target, and type of bombs used in Friday’s attacks immediately raised suspicions of involvement by the Jemaah Islamiyah terrorist group and Noordin M. Top, the fugitive Malaysian national who heads a particularly violent offshoot of the network.
While National Police spokesman Major General Nanan Soekarna said authorities “cannot say for sure whether Noordin M. Top led this bombing,’’ others were more certain. “I’m 200 percent sure this was his work,’’ said Nasir Abbas, a former Jemaah Islamiyah leader turned police informant who has worked with police on investigations into Indonesia’s last three terrorist attacks.
A police investigator said yesterday that Noordin was the most likely suspect. “Considering the target, the location, and content of the bombs, it was clearly the work of Noordin,’’ the investigator said, declining to give his name because he wasn’t authorized to speak to the media.

The investigator said a hotel receptionist told police that one of the suspected bombers who checked into the hotel days before gave his name as “Nurdin.’’ He gave a $1,000 cash deposit because he had no credit card, he said.

Noordin, an engineer and alleged bomb-maker, is accused of masterminding four major strikes in Indonesia with the help of Al Qaeda that killed more than 240 people, including the 2002 and 2005 Bali bombings, a strike on the J.W. Marriott in 2003, and a huge blast at the Australian Embassy in Jakarta in 2004 when a ton of explosives was hidden in a delivery van.
Police said they were also following leads in the Cilacap region of Central Java, where explosives were reportedly found buried in a garden last week at the house of Noordin’s father-in-law, who is also at large. “We can’t say for certain which network is involved in this bombing,’’ Soekarna said.
Investigators have been examining body parts and other forensic evidence from Friday’s attacks in an attempt to identify the two suspected bombers, one of whom is believed to be Indonesian.
Their bodies were badly damaged in the explosions - they were decapitated by the force - and confirming their identity could help determine whether they knew Noordin. Authorities say the bombers posed as guests before setting off the pair of blasts. They say the attackers evaded hotel security, smuggling explosives into the Marriott two days ahead of time and apparently assembled the bombs on the 18th floor, where an undetonated device was found after the explosions.

Police said they were also following leads in the Cilacap region of Central Java, where explosives were reportedly found buried in a garden last week at the house of Noordin’s father-in-law, who is also at large. “We can’t say for certain which network is involved in this bombing,’’ Soekarna said.
Investigators have been examining body parts and other forensic evidence from Friday’s attacks in an attempt to identify the two suspected bombers, one of whom is believed to be Indonesian.
Their bodies were badly damaged in the explosions - they were decapitated by the force - and confirming their identity could help determine whether they knew Noordin. Authorities say the bombers posed as guests before setting off the pair of blasts. They say the attackers evaded hotel security, smuggling explosives into the Marriott two days ahead of time and apparently assembled the bombs on the 18th floor, where an undetonated device was found after the explosions.

The attack occurred as the Marriott was hosting a regular meeting of top foreign executives of major companies in Indonesia organized by the consultancy firm CastleAsia, said the group, which is headed by an American. The blasts at the high-rise hotels, located side-by-side in an upscale business district in Jakarta, blew out windows and scattered debris and glass across the street, clouding the structures in thick smoke.
Security videos captured the moment of the explosion in the Marriott. The brief, grainy images show a man wearing a cap and pulling a bag on wheels walking across the lobby toward the restaurant, followed by a flash and smoke filling the air.

Initial reports said the Mitsubishi bomb consisted of C4, a military grade plastic explosive which is difficult to obtain, but the story was soon changed and the bomb was said to be of a more crude design. The sheer devastation the bomb wrought on surrounding buildings in the area suggested that a powerful explosive was used.
The ringleader of the Bali bombers claims that the attack on the nightclub district in 2002 was much larger than he had expected and that the only explanation for so much carnage was that the bombers were aided by the CIA, KGB or Mossad.
Imam Samudra, the alleged mastermind behind the attack who also chose the targets, told the London Times in an interview that the second explosion was bigger than the bombers had expected and the attack killed far more people than originally intended.
The death toll amounted to 202 people, 168 of whom were foreign nationals including 88 Australians and 28 Britons.
He claimed the bombers had never meant to kill so many people. What happened at Paddy’s Bar and the Sari Club was “unacceptable”, he said.
Had he made the bomb? “No, no, no!” he said, shaking his head. “I didn’t help to make it, and who made the bomb and when I don’t know.”
The second explosion was much bigger than they had expected, he said.
The only explanation, he suggested, was that “the CIA or KGB or Mossad” – those familiar bogeymen of the conspiracy theorist – had somehow tampered with the bomb. “It is very possible,” he claimed.
Despite The Times’ best efforts to scoff at the claim, the fact that U.S. and British authorities were tipped off in advance of the bombing is documented.
The second bomb, which was loaded inside a Mitsubishi L300 van, was detonated as people fled out into the streets as a result of the panic generated by the smaller first bomb which was detonated inside the nightclub.

Sources told the film makers that government-connected criminals were carrying out an agenda of depopulation in the targeted areas by lowering the value of property and resources, then buying it on the cheap.
By following international news reports out of Taiwan at the time, we were able to confirm that the U.S. government had advance knowledge of the Bali bombing. They passed that knowledge on to the Taiwanese government and told them to keep the information top secret.
Hours before the bombing took place, the U.S. withdrew all its administrative staff and diplomats from Indonesia, citing a "security threat". The British government also received the same warning but this wasn’t passed on to any relevant authority or the hundreds of victims carelessly making their way to a beach party.
Immediately after the bombing, the FBI, the Australian Secret Service and British secret police swooped in to the bomb site and ruthlessly took charge of the investigation, much to the chagrin of the Indonesian authorities and the Balinese police.

Using Indonesia to Push the Agenda
Forgive me for not being that in to the analysis, dear readers.
Reading the same retreaded articles time after time sort of takes the enthusiasm out of the whole endeavor.

JAKARTA, Indonesia — One of Indonesia’s top radical Muslim clerics was arrested yesterday on accusations that he played an important role in terrorist training and had links to militants plotting a series of attacks on Indonesian officials and foreigners.
The cleric, Abu Bakar Bashir, was arrested along with five bodyguards in West Java on accusations that he “had an active role’’ in setting up a militant training camp in the northern Sumatran province of Aceh, said the national police spokesman, Inspector General Edward Aritonang.
Authorities said Bashir helped form a new terror cell that was plotting attacks on hotels and embassies in Indonesia’s capital. They said they found a bomb-making laboratory and evidence of at least two powerful test blasts in a nearby mountain range.
The arrest followed weeks of speculation that the police were preparing to arrest Bashir, a founder of the radical Jemaah Islamiyah movement, which has been blamed for a series of terrorist attacks, including nightclub bombings that killed 202 people in Bali in 2002. The arrest was part of a series of raids before an upcoming visit to the region by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.
The 71-year-old cleric was escorted under tight security to police headquarters in Jakarta.
“The United States is behind this!’’ he shouted just before entering the building. Then he smiled and said: “This arrest is a blessing . . . . I will be rewarded by Allah!’’

It was not the first time Bashir has been accused of direct involvement in terrorism. In previous arrests, American and Australian officials argued that Bashir had a role in the Bali attack and the 2003 bombing of a Jakarta hotel. He was acquitted of terrorism charges in a trial in 2003 for the Bali attack but convicted on a passport violation.
Bashir helped form and was in active contact with Al Qaeda of the Veranda of Mecca, a group in Aceh that includes members of other radical organizations and aims to create a base for holy war throughout the country, Aritonang said.
Oh, which "Al-CIA-Duh" would that be, huh?

Police raids earlier this year against the group broke up the camp, and scores of terrorism suspects were arrested or killed. Dulmatin, one of Asia’s most wanted militants, was shot and killed by the police in March.
Bashir “knew all the connections, training, and plans that happened in Aceh, because he routinely received reports from managers in the field,’’ Aritonang said. The arrest was linked to the capture of five suspected militants who were believed to be from the group and the discovery of bomb-making materials in West Java on Saturday, he said.
The suspects were accused of wanting to carry out bombing attacks on the National Police headquarters, the West Java police Mobile Brigade headquarters, international hotels, and “more than two’’ foreign embassies.
In one place, the police found a bomb that had not yet been detonated, Aritonang said. In another location, they found a vehicle that was being prepared as a car bomb. The police said that they were searching for a French man who was believed to have bought the car.
Bashir’s arrest had been anticipated after the police linked members of his above-ground Islamic organization, Jamaah Anshorut Tauhid, to the Aceh group, said Sidney Jones, an analyst with the International Crisis Group.

The United States and Australia wanted Abu Bakar Bashir, supposedly the spiritual leader of Jemaah Islamiyah, to spend the rest of his life in prison for the Bali bombing. Instead, Bashir was “sentenced Thursday to 2 1/2 years in prison for conspiracy,” although the United States and Australia “were hoping for a lengthy prison term to deter terrorism in the world’s most populous Muslim nation [Indonesia],” according to ABC News. “We’d have liked a longer sentence,” lamented Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer.
Jemaah Islamiyah is described as a militant Islamic separatist movement dedicated to the establishment of a fundamentalist Islamic state in Southeast Asia, in particular Indonesia, Singapore, Brunei, Malaysia, and the south of Thailand and the Philippines, as noted by Wikipedia. It is said Jemaah Islamiyah is an al-Qaeda franchise and is connected to Abu Sayyaf, a separatist group based in and around the southern islands of the Philippines, primarily Jolo, Basilan, and Mindanao.
It is interesting Bashir stands accused of leading Jemaah Islamiyah and yet claims both Jemaah Islamiyah and al-Qaeda are CIA ops designed to “to persecute Muslims throughout the world,” according to Richard S. Ehrlich of the Bangkok Post.
According to Sayed Abdullah, who operates an intelligence services firm in Indonesia, “It is clear that the CIA and the Mossad have infiltrated such organizations [Jemaah Islamiyah, Hamas, and Hezbollah].” Abdullah told Kazi Mahmood of IslamOnline the he believe it “is obvious the CIA and the Mossad, assisted by the Australian Special Action Police (SAP) and the M15 of England, are all working towards undermining Muslim organizations in an attempt to weaken the Muslims globally.”
It is no secret the CIA has run covert operations for decades. In Indonesia, the CIA “infiltrated arms and personnel in support of the regional rebellions against Sukarno,” writes Peter Dale Scott. The CIA and the Indonesian military organized “civilian murder bands” that ultimately slaughtered between 250,000 and 500,000 people in 1965. As Mark Zepezauer explains, the “Indonesian military, trained and backed by the US, provoked a leftist coup against its leader, General Suharto. When the coup failed, the military used it as an excuse to depose Sukarno and replace him with Suharto. (According to diplomatic documents, the coup was a setup to justify the military takeover.)”
Organizing, training, and funding radical Mujahedeen in Afghanistan—including Osama bin Laden—is considered the CIA’s “largest and most successful CIA operation in history” and “the one morally unambiguous crusade of our time,” according to George Crile, a veteran producer for the CBS’ 60 Minutes. “By way of deception, thou shalt do war,” is the motto of Mossad, according to Victor Ostrovsky, a former Mossad agent. “Supporting the radical elements of Muslim fundamentalism sat well with the Mossad’s general plan,” writes Ostrovsky. In fact, as UPI correspondent Richard Sale documents, Israel actively funded Hamas. Brig. Gen. Yithaq Segev, the military governor of Gaza, told Sale Israel funded “Islamic movements as a counterweight to the PLO and communists.”
As Sayed Abdullah sees it, the Bali bombing was a classic false flag operation. Bali was “an operation clearly financed and assisted by the CIA and Mossad, made use of Muslims to carry out the final act. Those Muslims were not innocent since they took the bait handed over by the CIA and the Mossad to bomb Bali and to avenge against the U.S. war on the Muslims in Afghanistan.” Abdullah said “to achieve this, the CIA used one of its operatives, Omar Al-Faruq, an Arab living in the U.S. who speaks Arabic and knows a little about Islam and who was sent to Indonesia to infiltrate the so called terrorist groups.”
“Former State Intelligence Coordinating Board (BAKIN) [Badan Koordinasi Intelijen Negara, the Indonesian intelligence agency] chief A.C. Manulang has said that Kuwaiti citizen Omar Al-Faruq, a terrorist suspect who was arrested in Bogor, West Java, on June 5, 2002 and handed over to the US three days later, is a CIA-recruited agent,” Tempo Interactive reported on September 19, 2002. According to Time Magazine, however, “al-Faruq was one of bin Laden’s top representatives in Southeast Asia, responsible for coordinating the activities of the region’s disparate Islamic militant groups and employing their forces to conduct terror attacks against the U.S. and its allies.”
It should be noted that Osama bin Laden worked for the CIA in Afghanistan and al-Qaeda would later appear in Bosnia to help “Kosovo rebels battle for independence from Serbia with the financial and military backing of the United States and NATO,” according to the National Post. “The United States, which had originally trained the Afghan Arabs during the war in Afghanistan, supported them in Bosnia and then in Kosovo. When NATO forces launched their military campaign against Yugoslavia … they entered the Kosovo conflict on the side of the KLA, which had already received ’substantial’ military and financial support from bin Laden’s network, analysts say.”
Is it possible Omar Al-Faruq pulled off the Bali bombings with CIA-Mossad assistance and Abu Bakar Bashir is innocent? “How do we know that the CIA was behind the coup that overthrew Hugo Chavez?” writes William Blum. “Same way we know that the sun will rise tomorrow morning. That’s what it’s always done and there’s no reason to think that tomorrow morning will be any different.” How do we know the CIA and Mossad were behind the Bali bombing? We don’t, not exactly, but we do know they have done similar things in the past.

The Wildlife Conservation Society deployed marine biologists to Aceh province, on the tip of Sumatra island, in May when surface waters in the Andaman Sea peaked at 93 degrees Fahrenheit — a 7 degree Fahrenheit rise over long-term averages.

You know who lives near Sumatra, right?
The teams discovered massive bleaching, which occurs when algae living inside coral tissues are expelled. Subsequent surveys carried out together with Australia’s James Cook University and Indonesia’s Syiah Kuala University showed 80 percent of those corals have since died.
Or maybe it was U.S. Naval operations.

It was not the first time Bashir has been accused of direct involvement in terrorism. In previous arrests, American and Australian officials argued that Bashir had a role in the Bali attack and the 2003 bombing of a Jakarta hotel. He was acquitted of terrorism charges in a trial in 2003 for the Bali attack but convicted on a passport violation.
Bashir helped form and was in active contact with Al Qaeda of the Veranda of Mecca, a group in Aceh that includes members of other radical organizations and aims to create a base for holy war throughout the country, Aritonang said.

Police raids earlier this year against the group broke up the camp, and scores of terrorism suspects were arrested or killed. Dulmatin, one of Asia’s most wanted militants, was shot and killed by the police in March.
Bashir “knew all the connections, training, and plans that happened in Aceh, because he routinely received reports from managers in the field,’’ Aritonang said. The arrest was linked to the capture of five suspected militants who were believed to be from the group and the discovery of bomb-making materials in West Java on Saturday, he said.
The suspects were accused of wanting to carry out bombing attacks on the National Police headquarters, the West Java police Mobile Brigade headquarters, international hotels, and “more than two’’ foreign embassies.
In one place, the police found a bomb that had not yet been detonated, Aritonang said. In another location, they found a vehicle that was being prepared as a car bomb. The police said that they were searching for a French man who was believed to have bought the car.
Bashir’s arrest had been anticipated after the police linked members of his above-ground Islamic organization, Jamaah Anshorut Tauhid, to the Aceh group, said Sidney Jones, an analyst with the International Crisis Group.

The United States and Australia wanted Abu Bakar Bashir, supposedly the spiritual leader of Jemaah Islamiyah, to spend the rest of his life in prison for the Bali bombing. Instead, Bashir was “sentenced Thursday to 2 1/2 years in prison for conspiracy,” although the United States and Australia “were hoping for a lengthy prison term to deter terrorism in the world’s most populous Muslim nation [Indonesia],” according to ABC News. “We’d have liked a longer sentence,” lamented Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer.
Jemaah Islamiyah is described as a militant Islamic separatist movement dedicated to the establishment of a fundamentalist Islamic state in Southeast Asia, in particular Indonesia, Singapore, Brunei, Malaysia, and the south of Thailand and the Philippines, as noted by Wikipedia. It is said Jemaah Islamiyah is an al-Qaeda franchise and is connected to Abu Sayyaf, a separatist group based in and around the southern islands of the Philippines, primarily Jolo, Basilan, and Mindanao.
It is interesting Bashir stands accused of leading Jemaah Islamiyah and yet claims both Jemaah Islamiyah and al-Qaeda are CIA ops designed to “to persecute Muslims throughout the world,” according to Richard S. Ehrlich of the Bangkok Post.
According to Sayed Abdullah, who operates an intelligence services firm in Indonesia, “It is clear that the CIA and the Mossad have infiltrated such organizations [Jemaah Islamiyah, Hamas, and Hezbollah].” Abdullah told Kazi Mahmood of IslamOnline the he believe it “is obvious the CIA and the Mossad, assisted by the Australian Special Action Police (SAP) and the M15 of England, are all working towards undermining Muslim organizations in an attempt to weaken the Muslims globally.”
It is no secret the CIA has run covert operations for decades. In Indonesia, the CIA “infiltrated arms and personnel in support of the regional rebellions against Sukarno,” writes Peter Dale Scott. The CIA and the Indonesian military organized “civilian murder bands” that ultimately slaughtered between 250,000 and 500,000 people in 1965. As Mark Zepezauer explains, the “Indonesian military, trained and backed by the US, provoked a leftist coup against its leader, General Suharto. When the coup failed, the military used it as an excuse to depose Sukarno and replace him with Suharto. (According to diplomatic documents, the coup was a setup to justify the military takeover.)”
Organizing, training, and funding radical Mujahedeen in Afghanistan—including Osama bin Laden—is considered the CIA’s “largest and most successful CIA operation in history” and “the one morally unambiguous crusade of our time,” according to George Crile, a veteran producer for the CBS’ 60 Minutes. “By way of deception, thou shalt do war,” is the motto of Mossad, according to Victor Ostrovsky, a former Mossad agent. “Supporting the radical elements of Muslim fundamentalism sat well with the Mossad’s general plan,” writes Ostrovsky. In fact, as UPI correspondent Richard Sale documents, Israel actively funded Hamas. Brig. Gen. Yithaq Segev, the military governor of Gaza, told Sale Israel funded “Islamic movements as a counterweight to the PLO and communists.”
As Sayed Abdullah sees it, the Bali bombing was a classic false flag operation. Bali was “an operation clearly financed and assisted by the CIA and Mossad, made use of Muslims to carry out the final act. Those Muslims were not innocent since they took the bait handed over by the CIA and the Mossad to bomb Bali and to avenge against the U.S. war on the Muslims in Afghanistan.” Abdullah said “to achieve this, the CIA used one of its operatives, Omar Al-Faruq, an Arab living in the U.S. who speaks Arabic and knows a little about Islam and who was sent to Indonesia to infiltrate the so called terrorist groups.”
“Former State Intelligence Coordinating Board (BAKIN) [Badan Koordinasi Intelijen Negara, the Indonesian intelligence agency] chief A.C. Manulang has said that Kuwaiti citizen Omar Al-Faruq, a terrorist suspect who was arrested in Bogor, West Java, on June 5, 2002 and handed over to the US three days later, is a CIA-recruited agent,” Tempo Interactive reported on September 19, 2002. According to Time Magazine, however, “al-Faruq was one of bin Laden’s top representatives in Southeast Asia, responsible for coordinating the activities of the region’s disparate Islamic militant groups and employing their forces to conduct terror attacks against the U.S. and its allies.”
It should be noted that Osama bin Laden worked for the CIA in Afghanistan and al-Qaeda would later appear in Bosnia to help “Kosovo rebels battle for independence from Serbia with the financial and military backing of the United States and NATO,” according to the National Post. “The United States, which had originally trained the Afghan Arabs during the war in Afghanistan, supported them in Bosnia and then in Kosovo. When NATO forces launched their military campaign against Yugoslavia … they entered the Kosovo conflict on the side of the KLA, which had already received ’substantial’ military and financial support from bin Laden’s network, analysts say.”
Is it possible Omar Al-Faruq pulled off the Bali bombings with CIA-Mossad assistance and Abu Bakar Bashir is innocent? “How do we know that the CIA was behind the coup that overthrew Hugo Chavez?” writes William Blum. “Same way we know that the sun will rise tomorrow morning. That’s what it’s always done and there’s no reason to think that tomorrow morning will be any different.” How do we know the CIA and Mossad were behind the Bali bombing? We don’t, not exactly, but we do know they have done similar things in the past.

The Wildlife Conservation Society deployed marine biologists to Aceh province, on the tip of Sumatra island, in May when surface waters in the Andaman Sea peaked at 93 degrees Fahrenheit — a 7 degree Fahrenheit rise over long-term averages.
Where they using a NOAA satellite?
You know who lives near Sumatra, right?
The teams discovered massive bleaching, which occurs when algae living inside coral tissues are expelled. Subsequent surveys carried out together with Australia’s James Cook University and Indonesia’s Syiah Kuala University showed 80 percent of those corals have since died.
Or maybe it was U.S. Naval operations.

The high water temperatures — which the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Coral Hotspots website indicates have affected the entire Andaman Sea and beyond — also occurred soon after the point in the year when sunlight was at its most direct angle and at a time of little cloud cover or wind.

BAGHDAD - A gunman wearing an Iraqi Army uniform opened fire on a US military team yesterday, killing two American soldiers and wounding three, the US military said, in an attack that could sharpen worries about militant infiltration in Iraq's security forces.
Then -- as the MSM propaganda organs have been telegraphing -- we simply must stay. We can't withdraw, not now, not ever!
Iraqi officials described the attacker - who was killed in the gun battle - as a soldier who was also a Sunni Muslim preacher for his unit near Mosul, one of the last urban strongholds for Sunni insurgents. The ambush could increase pressure on the Shi'ite-led government to root out possible turncoats and slow efforts to bring Sunni militiamen into the police and military as rewards for helping battle Al Qaeda in Iraq and other insurgent factions.
But any possible slowdown of the Sunni outreach will meet resistance from Washington, which sees the sectarian reconciliation as essential for Iraq's stability and to keep security gains from rolling back. In the past, attackers have used military and police uniforms to bypass checkpoints and gain access to heavily guarded bases. But several Iraqi military officials said the gunman was a low-ranking Iraqi soldier.
The attack would mark one of the few confirmed cases where a member of Iraq's security forces targeted US troops. On Feb. 24, two Iraqi police officers in Mosul opened fire on a visiting US military team, killing one American soldier and an interpreter. The gunmen remain fugitives.

In the northern city of Kirkuk, security patrols were boosted after an attempted suicide bombing Friday was foiled by guards at the last moment at a Shi'ite mosque. Tensions have risen in Kirkuk as Kurdish leaders seek to incorporate it into their semiautonomous area, making it one of the most politically sensitive issues for Iraqi leaders and for US military commanders preparing to withdraw their troops by the end of 2011.
Yeah, whatever. That carrot been out in front of us for six years. I believe its a MSM mirage.

The officer spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to release the information.
Kirkuk police chief Maj. Gen. The agreement does not preclude combat soldiers from patrolling in Baghdad, Mosul, and other cities....

That has led some in Congress to try to rein the company in. But while the Senate is currently weighing a bill aimed at holding US companies accountable for the work of their foreign subsidiaries in Iran, Schlumberger, with its foreign status, remains largely out of the government's reach.
"People on the Hill want to put Schlumberger under the same constraints of a typical American company, but no one can figure out how to make than happen," said Robert Ebel, an oil specialist who has served in the State Department and the CIA.
Meanwhile, some of Schlumberger's rivals have sought to replicate its international status. Weatherford shifted its place of incorporation from Delaware to Bermuda in 2002, and last year Halliburton moved its headquarters and CEO to Dubai.

WASHINGTON - The US government is financing its more than trillion-dollar-a-year borrowing with IOUs on terms that seem too good to be true.
But that happy situation - a result of interest rates dropping to extraordinary lows, even as the government has had to borrow more and more - may not last for long.
The whole tone of this piece is already annoying me, as if the debt and borrowing is a good thing!
Treasury officials now face a trifecta of headaches: a mountain of new debt, a balloon of short-term borrowings that come due in the months ahead, and interest rates that are sure to climb back to normal as soon as the Federal Reserve decides the emergency has passed. Even as Treasury officials are racing to lock in today’s low rates by exchanging short-term borrowings for long-term bonds, the government faces a payment shock similar to those that sent legions of overstretched homeowners into default on their mortgages.
Of course, in THIS CASE the GOVERNMENT PAYMENT SHOCK is YOUR SHOCK, taxpayers!!!!
With the national debt now topping $12 trillion, the White House estimates the government’s tab for servicing the debt will top $700 billion a year in 2019, up from $202 billion this year, even if annual budget deficits shrink dramatically. Other forecasters say the figure could be much higher.
Yeah, except:
"Interest payments on the debt cost $452 billion last year, the largest federal spending category after Medicare-Medicaid, Social Security, and defense"

In concrete terms, an additional $500 billion a year in interest expense would total more than the combined federal budgets this year for education, energy, homeland security, and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The potential for rapidly escalating interest payouts is just one of the wrenching challenges facing the United States after decades of living beyond its means.

The surge in borrowing over the last year or two is widely judged to have been a necessary response to the financial crisis and the deep recession, and there is still a raging debate over how aggressively to bring down deficits over the next few years. But there is little doubt that the United States’ long-term budget crisis is becoming too big to postpone.

Americans now have to climb out of two deep holes: as debt-loaded consumers, whose personal wealth sank along with housing and stock prices, and as taxpayers, whose government debt has almost doubled in the last two years alone, just as costs tied to benefits for retiring baby boomers are set to explode.

The United States will not be the only government competing to refinance huge debt. As the global economy recovers and businesses raise capital to finance their growth, all that new government debt is likely to put more upward pressure on interest rates. An increase of 1 percentage point in the Treasury’s average cost of borrowing would cost American taxpayers an extra $80 billion this year - about equal to the combined budgets of the Department of Energy and the Department of Education.

Evan Kohlmann, a senior investigator for the New York-based NEFA Foundation, which researches Islamic militants, suggested rivalry among al-Qaida's branches may be a factor behind the focus on the U.S. He said al-Qaida central in Afghanistan and Pakistan is still the main source of attempts to attack the United States. "There's now a competition in the world of al-Qaida between various al-Qaida factions, with each trying to prove themselves and prove their worth," he said.
"The ultimate achievement for these folks is being able to replicate something that previously only al-Qaida central could achieve," he added. "If you can be sophisticated enough to hit a target in the continental United States, that's a tremendous achievement for these folks."

Evan Kohlmann, a senior investigator for the New York-based NEFA Foundation, which researches Islamic militants, suggested rivalry among al-Qaida's branches may be a factor behind the focus on the U.S. He said al-Qaida central in Afghanistan and Pakistan is still the main source of attempts to attack the United States. "There's now a competition in the world of al-Qaida between various al-Qaida factions, with each trying to prove themselves and prove their worth," he said.
"The ultimate achievement for these folks is being able to replicate something that previously only al-Qaida central could achieve," he added. "If you can be sophisticated enough to hit a target in the continental United States, that's a tremendous achievement for these folks."

Yemen has not confirmed Abdulmutallab's claims that he was aided by al-Qaida operatives in the country and officials told The Associated Press investigations are ongoing. Significantly, the government has not denied his claims. Meanwhile, Yemen's government appears to be mounting a serious and aggressive campaign against al-Qaida after years of treading carefully with the militants. The intensified battle coincides with increased Yemeni-U.S. cooperation.
Last week's attack targeted a meeting of Yemeni and foreign al-Qaida operatives believed to include the top leader of Al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, Naser Abdel-Karim al-Wahishi, and his deputy Said al-Shihri. There were reports, later denied by family and friends, that al-Awlaki, the radical cleric linked to the Fort Hood shooter, was killed in the bombings. Shihri was one of 11 former Guantanamo detainees that Saudi Arabia said went through a rehabilitation program but later joined al-Qaida. He emerged as a leader of Yemen's branch of al-Qaida after being released from the Saudi program last year.

Yemeni Foreign Minister Abu-Bakr al-Qirbi discussed Yemen's campaign against al-Qaida with Arab diplomats on Sunday, but it was not clear whether Abdulmutallab's case came up. In a statement, al-Qirbi said his country had long planned the operations against al-Qaida elements and the decision to execute them was expedited because al-Qaida has increasingly threatened the country's stability. "Al-Qaida elements went far by carrying out attacks against security officers, and threatened the country's stability and economic interests which made the decision impossible to postpone," he said.
The United States and Saudi Arabia, Yemen's powerful northern neighbor, have expressed concern over al-Qaida's growing presence in Yemen. The Pentagon has spent about $70 million this year on assisting Yemen against the militants as U.S. officials pressed that country to take tougher action. Yemen, at the tip of the Arabian peninsula, straddles a strategic maritime crossroads at the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, the access point to the Suez Canal.
