Most of Northwest Cambodia and all of Laos used to belong to Thailand when it was the Kingdom of Siam.
The French, in 1907, stole Thai territory and put it in their colonial imperialist hold called "French Indochina". In 1940, Thai Armed forces fought the French colonial forces in Cambodia and Laos and took back their territory. Thailand had better equipment, from Japan, and a better trained force than the French. It was a stunning defeat for France. The first time a Southeast Asian nation had beaten a Western power...... it wouldn't the last.

After WWII, the French threatened to keep Thailand out of the newly formed United Nations until it gave back the land it liberated during the Thai-French war. The British, who had colonies in Malaysia, the Dutch who had colonies in Indonesia, and the Americans, who controlled the Philippines, sided with the French. Thailand moved out of the territory, but never gave up their rights and sovereignty to land.

In 1954 Vietnamese nationalists, led by Ho Chi Minh, ejected the French from Vietnam. They used the Thai defeat of the French in 1940 as a battle cry.

The US entered the region, to maintain a Western dominance of Southeast Asia and to stem the Communist influence. The Americans, in need of Southeast Asian allies, promised Thailand it would help in restoring their lost territory if they could get help in defeating the Communists. Thailand aided the US in its futile war in Vietnam.
The Vietnamese ejected the US from Vietnam, again they were encouraged by the Thai-French war in 1940

Thailand is a Democracy, the only one in the region, and certain conservative politicians have used the stolen territory as a political tool to rile up the population to vote for them. It seems the Thai people themselves, want their territory back, They prefer peaceful negotiations and solutions, but a rising economic power, Thailand is bristling with new weapons and a large Armed Forces, and is prepare to reclaim their stolen territory by themselves. Not relying on the US or the UN, but their ancient Siam Kingdom territorial claims….this time using machine guns, artillery and modern weapons of war to get back what was stolen by Western imperialism.
