Even if he were poor, WHITE, and retarded, many states would execute him anyway. SC has done it before, and I know Texas has.
The execution of mentally retarded inmates in what makes us stand alone as a First World country. The USA executes the mentally retarded and the mentally ill, which is barbaric.
However, the standards should be very high in order for someone to be declared mentally ill or mentally retarded.
Poor and *anything* will get you the death penalty, especially in the South. It's never a factor. This guy Stanford probably has a minor speech impediment or something after getting his butt kicked by another inmate, but he'll qualify for "mentally unable to assist in his defense." Money buys great lawyers; great lawyers and money can get you a sweet deal probably anywhere in this country.@Earl: the AZ shooter may stand trial, but he'll probably be sentenced to a Federal Bureau of Prisons mental hospital for inmates. Or, he'll get a very light custody level and be cared for by medical staff at
least part time.
Being rich can buy comfy incarceration, if not total freedom from our laws, in America. It's always been true, around the world.
