Don G. -- the world should take note of the local people's response to this disaster.

No (or almost no) looting; no violence; no despair or hopelessness.

Instead, within days thousands, tens of thousands, of volunteers have been busy helping out the people with flooded houses or businesses. Apart from longer-term infrastructure, much of the city is nearly back to business-as-usual.

Roads and rail, some electrical work, and safety checks aside, a huge amount of basic restoration work is already done. By the people. They didn't sit down dejected and cry for the government to help them. They helped each other.

Every flood-prone city would do well to study video footage of Queensland's Great Flood of '11 and to encourage populations to work in unison, together, not for reward but for community.

Well done Queensland!
