. The Limitations of 1960's Computer Technology, small meteors, and the Van Allen Belts.

Almost 40 years ago, with *combined CSM and LM guidance computer memory totaling only 10.3% [152kb] of a common 1.4MB [1474.56kb] floppy disk, NASA claims to have traveled 60,000% as far as any other manned spacecraft has gone before or since. Basically a household calculator (or discount watch) took 27 men [Apollo 8 to 17] to the moon and back, with the help of slide rules - accounting for fuel consumption, angle of approach, lunar landing, rate of descent, and so on. Yet at a distance of under 300 miles from Earth, we have lost the lives of 14 Shuttle astronauts who never left Earth orbit. In 9 trips there were no incidents involving small meteors, even though the hull of the craft dubbed the LM had a hull so thin in places that a screwdriver wall fall through the floor if dropped. Yes, Space is a big place - but there were no injuries or damage except Apollo 13's apparent self-inflicted wound? Van Allen made it clear in his 1958-59 report that travelers to the moon would need go around the belts, approaching the moon by first departing through the space directly above the the north or south poles of the Earth. These limitations alone, make the trip to the moon a theory, and not a fact.

Surprisingly, the list includes 4 from North & South America (the Darien Gap, the "Death Road" in Bolivia, Rute 5 in Chile, and Alaska Route 11). Less surprising are two roads in China, the Russian "Federal Highway" (shown above) connecting Moscow and Yakutsk, Siberia, the Kabul-Kandahar connection in Afghanistan (no surprise there), and some stunning looking views in Europe. No texting while driving on any of these roads, of course, regardless of what local laws may say.

from...http://undhimmi.com

An 18-year-old woman was flogged in public outside the Justice Building [in Malé] and sentenced to a year of house arrest today for having extra-marital sex.

The woman received 100 lashes after confessing to having extra-marital sex with two men on separate occasions earlier this year.

She was taken to hospital after the lashing; although an official at Criminal Court said she had tripped on a step and hurt her leg, Judge Abdulla Mohamed, chief judge of the Criminal Court, said she fainted.

Abdulla said the courts could not prosecute the two men as Rahma was unable to provide any details about the first man and the second man denied his involvement.

Latest statistics from the department of judicial administration’s website reveal that in 2006, out of 184 lashed for extra-marital sex, 146 were women.

Speaking to Minivan News MP for Galolhu Eva Abdulla said, “It seems a bit disproportionate considering there always has to be two people involved.”

She further pointed to other forms of corporal punishment in Sharia law, which were not practiced in the Maldives.

“We don’t cut off the hands of all those who steal and we don’t implement the death sentence so why do we continue with these very inhumane practices, especially when the statistics show that the victims are women,” she said.

But, Judge Abdulla said more women were sentenced than men because while men were able to deny the crime, pregnancy often implicated women.

“A man after making this problem will go and maybe the woman will have relations with more than one man and won’t know who was responsible or the man denies it,” he said.

Without a confession, extra-marital sex cases are very difficult to prosecute, he said, as they required the testimony of four witnesses.

While she did not comment on this specific case, Jeehan Mahmoud from the Human Rights Commission Maldives (HRCM) said the Maldives was signatory to both the Convention Against Torture and the Optional Protocol to the Convention Against Torture.

Under these international human rights instruments, any act which causes severe pain or suffering, whether physical or mental, and is used as a punishment is prohibited.

Judge Abdulla said the goal was not to cause injury to the offender and the person administering the punishment was not to raise his arm higher than his shoulder.

Flogging is dispensed with a leather paddle called a duraa in the Maldives.

On why floggings were public, Abdulla said the method was prescribed in the Qur’an and its purpose was to act as a deterrent.

“Because the public should know this lady or man have done these things and they will stay away from these things,” he said.

Speaking to Minivan News today, documentary filmmaker Ali Rasheed, said he hoped both the HRCM and the gender department in the health ministry would condemn the act.

While both Rasheed and Eva said they were “shocked” to hear about the lashing, Abdulla said public floggings were common in the Maldives, and the last one was carried out on 30 June.

Further, around 200 people found guilty of extramarital sex were awaiting the punishment.

Rasheed, who has made two films about violence against women, said an interview with one woman, who had been sentenced to flogging, revealed the practice left behind indelible psychological scars.

He added most Islamic countries had abolished the practice.

“People who support these kinds of acts will immediately bring religion into it and then the public are too afraid to speak,” said Rasheed. “I am sure most Maldivians wouldn’t support inhumane acts like this.”

This story provided us with an opportunity to continue with our aim to expose the ‘Lesser-known Jihad’, i.e. fanaticism and violence in the name of Allah; in places most people would either never suspect, or have ever heard about.

OK, so we’re maybe stretching a point a little here. There isn’t actually a Jihad per se in the Maldives – but only because there doesn’t need to be. In these lush, upscale jewels of the Indian Ocean, Sharia is the law of the land and has been for over 800 years (what little actual land there is – the Maldives consists of almost 1200 stunningly beautiful tropical atolls with barely anything between them and the ocean); and tourism is pretty much the only industry.

The country’s history is varied, after being originally settled by Indian sub-continent fisherman, then Tamils and Sinhalese; the islands were Bhuddist until the 12th Century, at which time Islam took hold. They were also a part of the British Empire until gaining Independence in 1960s; although they are a member of the Commonwealth and have been since 1982.

Today, as Sharia demands, no non-Muslim can become a Maldivian citizen and no other religion than Islam can be practised. So behind the five-star pampering, lurk undercurrents of violence, supremacism, misogyny and repression – just as in any other Muslim country.

So what we’d like you to consider is this. The next time you think of taking a holiday here (or hear of a friend or relative that may be considering a relaxing break or a romantic honeymoon in the Maldives – think about the 18-year old girl who collapsed and was rushed to hospital after being thrashed in public 100 times by the state judicial system, for having sex before she was married - despite the Maldives being a signatory to the United Nations Convention Against Torture.

Think about the fact that, whilst these people are happy to take your kuffar money, they would never, ever let you live in their land, nor practise your faith there.

The reason? Because behind the holiday smiles, Maldivian Muslims believe, as their faith instructs them; that you are inferior and are only fit to be subjugated.

Brazil tribe

Members of one of Brazil's uncontacted indigenous tribes have been photographed in a protected area of the Amazon jungle near Peru. All pictures: Brazil National Indian Foundation (Funai)

Funai officials said the aircraft passed over the site a number of times, and photographed "strong and healthy" warriors, women and children, six huts and a large planted area.

The first flight had an obvious impact on the tribe. By the time the plane returned, most of the women and children had fled and those who remained had painted their bodies.

These images are all from a later pass by the plane. The men, painted red, brandished weapons and fired off some arrows at the aircraft. The person in black may be a woman.

The government said the images would prove those who doubted the tribe's existence wrong. The tribe, which has not yet been identified, is one of four different isolated groups in the region.

Funai says it does not make contact with the tribes and prevents invasions of their land, to ensure their total autonomy.

More than half the world's 100 uncontacted tribes live in Brazil or Peru and campaigners say many face threats to their land from illegal logging.

19th Battalion Royal Malay Regiment (Mech) in Mogadishu Rescues American Rangers on the 3rd October 1993
Friday, November 16, 2007

Image above shows joyous Americans posing outside the Malaysian Condors after being rescued. Alot of people seem confused about the contributions of the 19th Battalion Royal Malay Regiment, otherwise known as 19th Mech or MALBAT. This battalion by itself was commanded by Lt Col Rozi, who was the Deputy Commander of MALBAT. Mark Bowdwn and Scott Ridley did not do justice to 19th RMR (Mech), they spun history their way, in the movie "Black Hawk Down". The Pakis who were in tanks turned tail and fled leaving the Malaysians and the Americans to fend for themselves. I am no great fan of the RMR but credit should be given where it is due. Even in Malaysia, no one knows the Leading Platoon Commander who led the column into Bakkara Market. Anyway, maybe he was a 2nd Lieutenant Kamal-edit

Autumn/Winter 1997–98 / JFQ 9
FOR THE RECORD To the Editor—In “War Criminals—Testing the Limits of the Military Force” which appeared in your last issue ( JFQ, Summer 97), F.M. Lorenz makes the following statement about the efforts of the Malaysian Battalion (MALBAT) in Somalia on October 3, 1993: When U.S. Rangers were under attack . . . the Malaysian force had the only armored vehicles in Mogadishu capable of mounting a rescue effort. But they refused to engage pending approval from Kuala Lumpur, and that took more than five hours. That assertion is not only untrue but is totally unfounded. Based on our records, the situation that evening unfolded as follows:

Above, at the stadium after the rescue, Malaysian Condors can be seen in the foreground-edit

On October 3, 1993, at approximately 1645 hours, UNOSOM II Headquarters requested MALBAT Headquarters to provide assistance to the U.S. Quick Reaction Force (QRF) to extricate approximately 70 U.S. Rangers and crew members of Cobra helicopters trapped in the vicinity of the Bakara Market. Earlier the Rangers had mounted an operation to arrest Farah Aideed near the Olympic Hotel where Aideed was meeting with his followers. The U.S. troops met with stiff resistance. In the ensuing firefight, two Cobras were shot down and a third sustained damage but managed to land safely at New Port. Subsequently, four rescue attempts by the remaining U.S. Rangers failed to break through the rebel defenses and also suffered heavy casualties.

Above, a Malaysian Infantry Fighting Vehicle, the Condor, an armoured wheeled vehicle-edit

The first MALBAT company assembled at New Port and was ready for final orders at 1755 hours and the second company assembled at 1830 hours. They were mounted on 32 APCs. In just about two hours, the two companies under the Malaysian commander, Col Latiff, were ready to deploy and “the decision came from him and never from Kuala Lumpur.” After further planning, the task force commander decided that the coalition force for the operation was to comprise two U.S. QRF companies mounted on MALBAT APCs, but with Malaysian drivers, gunners, signallers, vehicle commanders, and officers. There was also another company of U.S. Rangers on HUMVEEs and one troop of Pakistani tanks (4 tanks only-added by me).

The coalition force departed New Port for Bakara Market at approximately 2325 hours. The rescue operation was under the command of LTC William David, USA. In the operation MALBAT sustained one soldier killed and six wounded as well as having four APCs (corrected by me from two APCs) destroyed. It was the combined effort by the Rangers, MALBAT, and Pakistani troops that resulted in success. It must be stressed that the whole operation from briefing to deployment and execution was done at night, which is inherently difficult and complex. Any delay was largely due to the force having to appreciate, coordinate, and plan what was a dangerous rescue operation.

At all stages of the effort MALBAT acted spontaneously under Col Latiff and did not refer to Kuala Lumpur. Testimony by MG Thomas M. Montgomery, USA, deputy force commander of UNOSOM II, and LTC William C. David, USA, commander of 2/14th Infantry, verifies these facts. The men and women of the Malaysian Armed Forces are a dedicated, disciplined, reliable, and courageous force. In peacekeeping missions, through diligent esprit de corps, willingness to cooperate, and self sacrifice, they have gained a reputation for trust and prowess. The “Malaysian Tigers” are respected and accepted wherever they go. With the highest esteem for JFQI request that you print this letter to correct the record.
