Heinkel He 162A-2 Jet Fighter

The Heinkel He 162 Volksjäger ("People's Fighter", named after the Volkssturm) was a single-engined, jet-powered fighter aircraft fielded by the Luftwaffe in WWII. Designed and built in a rush (69 days!), and made primarily of wood as metals were in very short supply and prioritised for other aircraft, the He 162 was nevertheless the fastest of the first generation of Axis and Allied jets. This particular airframe, seen in the RAF Museum at Hendon in north-west London, was captured at Leck in northern Germany in 1945. Leck had been a training airfield for I./JG1. Recovered to the UK, it flew 26 research sorties. It arrived with a fitted ejection seat as standard (the He 162 was the first aircraft to be so fitted) but it has disappeared over the years. There are six remaining airframes (according to Wikipedia) but none are currently in flying condition.
