it is right to honor those victims of the holocaust. Jews, Gypsies, people of conscience and political minorities and opponents all suffered the same fate in WWII. We cannot allow this to happen again. Yet unspoken in these moving tributes are the ongoing and well-hidden policies of the Israeli government against the Palestinian people. Were Jews labeled and forbidden freedom of movement, held in camps and denied basic rights? Yes, the same is true for Palestinians living in Gaza and the West Bank. The pretense of peace talks between a lame Palestinian authority and a repressive, hard-line Israeli government is only the cosmetic cover to this reality in Israel.

Yes, we should remember the victims of the holocaust, but in our collective shame or guilt or desire to recompense those descendants of the holocaust, we should also not allow or condone the brutal and repressive policies of Israel's government against the Palestinian people who want no more than their rightful state and a fair chance for their people. Ultimately, every time we look the other way--while uttering these words of remembrance--the western democracies will have to pay for by direct aid or intervention in the Middle East the violence that continues because we fail to recognize or address the root causes for this tension and violence.
