Gates is exactly right. Does anyone think that the Iraqis or the Afghans appreciate our intervention and our setting them free from this or that dictator? The fact is they don't. Neither would the Lybians. Why don't we just put signs on our back saying "Kick me, I am a stupid idiot" and see how many around the world would refrain from doin so. With friends like those we have enough enemies for years to come. This is an internal problem for the people of Libya to resolve. If the USA intervenes, we will not only make more enemies in the Arab world, but we will also deprive the Libyan people of the self-respect and pride that comes from addressing and correcting their country's problems themselves. The people of Libya will not view their next regime as legitimate if the USA sets it up for them.Great article and an important debate. to date, I am unaware of any nation that has appreciated the United States getting involved in their civil wars. In fact it has created a hatred of the US that is sustained and dangerous. Getting involved in Libya is a no-win situation and needs to be avoided.
