On the news tonight in LA: The nuclear power plant in San Onofre on the southern edge of Orange county was built to withstand a 7.0 earthquake. It was built in the 1970's and has a similiar design as the nuclear plants now melting down in Japan.
BUT,....
"Scientists don't believe a catastrophe like the one in Japan could happen in the LA area."
What the f... do scientists know! They didn't think a 9.0 could happen in Japan either, otherwise they wouldn't have built multiple nuclear power plants in such an active earthquake zone.
Built to withstand a 7.0? California has had 16 earthquakes larger than 7.0 in the last 200 years. That's almost one every 10 years. And "scientists" don't think it could happen in Orange county? If and when "the big one" hits the LA basin, you best hope and pray that San Onofre has been shut down or this city would be utterly devastated.
In fact all nuclear plants in earthquake zones shut be shut down.
Not to mention the TONS of nuclear waste that each plant creates and for which there is NO SOLUTION and NO SAFE METHOD OF DISPOSAL.
Nuclear is just a bad idea all the way around. Instead we should be making massive investments into solar and other renewable and SAFE energy sources!!!
