The release of Al Megrahi was sanctioned by Barrack Obama as well as the Scottish government. He knew every step of the way what was happening. The UK does not have any newly obtained rights to oil. I have not seen any evidence of this anywhere. I did hear a rumor that BP was involved but as BP is a multinational company with as many shareholders in the US as the UK I don't see how that is the UK's newly acquired rights. It could be called the US's rights if the number of shareholders are any indicator as to where the oil will go.
What I believe was happening was the British government trying to engage the rebels in some form of dialogue, as it happened it backfired.
This is normal behavior for any government when they are encouraging regime change. They can't actually say that though as it is illegal. It would be like admitting the only reason the US went in to Iraq was to get rid of Saddam. It may be true but it will not be said.Help them? Well, I guess so. It depends on which side you think we are helping. We sent troops and amphibious units to help in case the rebels need evacuation, but, please consider that we also sold Ghadafi's people the guns and ammo that they are killing the rebels with. So, yeah, from a certain perspective we are helping....ourselves.
