Britain has said for the last 30 years. When the majority of Northern Ireland want to join with the republic the U.K would not stand in their way.
Do you think the R.O.I could handle 1000,000 very pissed off protestants. There would be civil war.These marches by the Orange Order with their Orange banners and flags is bad enough, but then they march thru Catholic neighborhoods. The middle aged people who wouldn't have put up with it when they were young, are older and more sheep like now. And of course the South (Republic of Ireland) has been pretty much bought out by Corporate Multi-nationals with higher paying jobs and the like. Like America, they have been neutered with gadgets, bobbles & trinkets. So that leaves the young to do what the young should do, revolt. And of course this is always lying slightly below the surface and all it takes is a provoking act by the Orange Order to ignite all this again. These incidents work out well for the Unionists of Ulster, since that gives them some evidence they can supply to the Brits in order to keep British troops in Ulster and remain part of the UK. Which is what they want.
