The politicians are trying to please the general public and do some manuvering on the international stage to isolate China i,e. in Africa... Burma, Iran. They hope this would not amount to a breakup of relationships between America and China, because they still need each other. It will be nice to have the support from the American public that makes their job so much easier. But this sort of things are easy to start but difficult to control. If and when US and China do breakup, there will be a depression in both countries. Say the GDP in both countries will be down 25%. For some Americans, the situation is so bad that it does not matter. From the conversations here, the simple slogans, bashing and walking away no longer works. There are people travelling to both countries. You cannot stop the goodwills that the average Chinese showed to the American people. In the end history is determined by the peoples on both sides. Now I don't think that China is perfect but I don't see what purpose it serves to antagonize such a strong military power by supporting an entity that by all accounts really does not serve our interests. Yeah sure, you sing platitudes about freedom all day, but when it comes down to it the US makes alliances when it serves its interest. Sometimes those interests do not align with democracy. That's just the cold, hard reality. It's realpolitik.
