The first report about the Priests molesting the children came in the 1450s. It is a DISGRACE that the Church waited nearly 500 YEARS before taking any action. Nearly 90 % of ALL homosexuals living in the United States of America are Catholic.
I sincerely do not understand why priests are treated differently than ordinary citizens in the eyes of the law in Ireland or for that matter in the USA.
What covenant is their between church and state that protects criminals who happen to be priests... If these people were judges, doctors, teachers or you and me, criminal charges would be pressed immediately. For that matter, doctors and teachers in the USA have a legal obligation to report suspected incidents of child molestation to the proper authorities and if they obscure or hide such information they are subject to serious penalties.
What gives? Why such a double standard? The arguement that the church polices its own has no basis to in law. Given that there is no basis in law, the authorities are not in effect not abetting criminal behavior.
