Doing wonders for their image as a moderate, forward thinking group of minds, PAS are doing their utmost to put an end to any Valentine's Day celebrations in the country, saying that they promote 'immoral activities'.
Their argument seems to be one of prevention.
They say that "We are not trying to assume the role of moral police" - which is funny, because that's exactly what it looks like.
Instead they say that, "We want to help save the youngsters from falling into the Valentine's Day trap that promotes immoral activities."
Interestingly, rather than the older figureheads of the party that one might typically associate with such views, this came from PAS' leaders of tomorrow – indeed it was the son of the PAS spiritual adviser Datuk Nik Aziz Nik Mat – who holds the post of the deputy youth chief within the Parti Islam se-Malaysia.
"Every year we join forces with various Muslim non-governmental organizations to create awareness that celebrating Valentine's Day is against the Islamic Shari'ah", he said.
Given that Islam does recognise happy occasions which bring couples closer together, it seems a strange move for Nik Abduh and his colleagues to rally behind so vocally. Or perhaps not so strange...
MCA youth chief, Dr Wee Ka Siong raised the more logical and balanced point that, "This is a democrative multi-racial country. We can't stop people from celebrating whatever event they wish to celebrate."
He noted that there was no such interference when it came to Chap Goh Mei, the Chinese version of Valentine's Day and that, "commercially driven events depend on supply and demand, PAS Youth should not interfere."
Meanwhile Kedah Gerakan Youth chief, Tan Keng Liang suggested that the Opposition leader ought to make sure his house was in order. There seems to be internal conflict about Valentine's Day.
Can Pakatan agree on a unified cross-party PKR-PAS-DAP Valentine's Day policy? It still has no Manifesto, so maybe not.
