The Pontiac Rebellion
Pontiac, also known as Obwandiyag, was an Ottawa leader who became
famous for his role in Pontiac's Rebellion (1763–1766), an American
Indian struggle against the British military occupation of the Great
Lakes region following the British victory in the French and Indian
War. In May of 1763, Pontiac and 300 followers attempted to take Fort
Detroit by surprise. His plan was foiled, so Pontiac laid siege to the
fort, and was eventually joined by more than 900 warriors from a
half-dozen tribes.
Pontiac's influence gained stature in the Illinois and Wabash country
as he continued to encourage resistance to the British.

British General Jeffrey Amherst Give The Indians Blankets
Infected With Smallpox
After the war, General Jeffrey Amherst was put in charge of Indian
affairs, and soon began cheating them for his own benefit. Amherst cut
off their rations and ammunition needed for their hunting . Chief
Pontiac again united the tribes and committed a surprise attack on
Fort Detroit.
The hostility between the British and Native Americans after the
French and Indian War led to one of the first documented attempts at
biological warfare in North American history. In response to the 1763
uprising known as Pontiac's Rebellion, Amherst used blankets infected
with smallpox as a weapon for racial extermination.

His subordinate, Colonel Henry Bouquet, infected Native
Americans with smallpox through gifts of blankets that had been
exposed to the disease.

After the war, Pontiac opposed Amherst being chief of Indian
Affairs, and also suspected him of ownership in various shady
trading posts. In 1769, the Jewish General Amherst had an assassin
kill Pontiac.
