I suppose they feel emboldened by other recent acts of piracy in international waters that went unpunished, such as the Israeli pirate attack on the aid convoy to Gaza, where no criminal charges for murder or piracy have been brought against the thuggish attackers. Now the Somalis can use that as justification and say they are only protecting their coast, and have merely seized the ships to inspect their cargos.To all the public idiots who have made the following statements:
1. The Obama Administration is doing nothing (some say to protect his Muslim friends);
2. The pirates used to be hung on the spot;
3. Pirates were made to "walk the plank;"
4. This Russian action at last shows up the U.S., the French, and the West in general, who have done nothing similar.
YOU ARE ALL 100% ENTIRELY WRONG. BEFORE YOU BLOW OUT YOUR BRAINS BLOWING YOUR NOSES, GET THE FACTS STRAIGHT.
The U.S. Navy is actively patrolling the region's waters, and has been for some time, in piracy suppression. Not only was the Maersk Alabama recovered and her hostage captain rescued by the U.S. navy, but many other attacks have been thwrted and pirates either killed or driven off by the U.S. Navy, on orders from the Obama Administration. This is MORE THAN EVER HAPPENED UNDER THAT WORTHLESS JERK BUSH.
President Obama is an American-born Christian Protestant. Get over it, righties, you LOST BIG.
PIRATES WERE NEVER HUNG ON THE SPOT. They were captured and returned to land for trial. It was not unusual that among crews of pirates brought to trial, some were found innocent or sentenced to lesser punishments. Ultimately it was destruction of land bases for piracy that brought it to an end.
PIRATES NEVER WALKED THE PLANK, AND NEITHER DID ANYONE ELSE. This is a wholly-fabricated piece of nonsense. See Philip Gosse, "the Pirate's Who's Who" and other histories of piracy.
Several ships taken by Horn of Africa pirates have been stormed and recaptured, sometimes at the loss of hostages' lives. American, British, French, Danish and Japanese forces have participated in such actions.
I am a professional maritime historian and am utterly repelled by the complete ignorance of most of those posting here. It's so easy to simply pay attention to current events and get your facts stright, much less look up a little history.
