Conservative have since the end of the 1960s fed the American people the panacea for our woes as less taxes and smaller governments. The Democrats have told the American people that the good life they lead will be ended if the Republicans cut government programs. With Reagan the people voted for cuts and less taxes. The taxes were reduced, but when programs came up to be cut, the American people yelled - hands off. So the Republicans with the Democrats cut taxes and increased spending and borrowed to cover the difference. That has been pretty much the story ever since - certainly was with W. As result the mess were in - Republicans true to their pro business/rich values refuse to raise taxes and now really want to cut programs. As the programs cut become better known, the shout of hands off will get even louder and popularity of the Republicans even lower. Its time for both parties to realize that they cannot continue on the stupid course of no new taxes and no cutting programs. Some members of both parties need to come together and decide how to deal with the deficit solution that includes both taxes and cuts. Americans must come to understand that they must pay for the quality of government they want and the quality of life they want - nothing is free!
