I am amazed by all the negative comments here. I don't think people are seeing the big picture. These rare earth elements are needed for all our green technologies, electric cars, windmills, efficient light bulbs, not to mention the Military needs it. A 500 ft pit in a National Park is a small price to pay.
China controls 97% of these minerals and they're tightening the supply. They have the power to stop the green revolution cold and put our Military at risk. We need our own mines badly. I say bravo!
If you care about the environment you have to support this. Otherwise we will continue to be hooked on oil. Do we really want to keep sending billions of dollars every month to the Middle East so we can pump more Greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere? Anyone remember the Gulf Spill last year? Global warming is no joke. We have to stop it before we lose all our coastal cities and live in a world with Hypercanes with 500mph winds.
I don't want to leave our fate in China's hands.
